The Walls Before Me
Have you ever felt as though God had forgotten you? Perhaps you have prayed for healing that has not come, direction that has not yet appeared, or relief from a burden that seems to grow heavier with each passing day. There are moments in every believer’s life when the walls in front of us seem too high to climb, too thick to break through, and too permanent to overcome.
That is exactly where the people of Israel found themselves. In their suffering and uncertainty, they cried out: “But Zion said, ‘The LORD has forsaken me, And the Lord has forgotten me.’” (Isaiah 49:14)
God’s response is one of the most tender and powerful assurances found in all of Scripture:
“Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of My hands; Your walls are continually before Me.” (Isaiah 49:16)
These words remind us that God never forgets His people, and that the walls we face have never escaped His attention.
The Meaning of the Passage
When Isaiah wrote these words, he was speaking to Zion, representing the people of Jerusalem. The nation would experience hardship, exile, and devastation. The very walls that protected the city would eventually lie in ruins. To the people, it seemed as though God had abandoned them.
Yet God answered their fear with a promise. He declared, “I have engraved you on the palms of My hands.” The image is deeply personal. Unlike something casually written down and misplaced, an engraving is permanent and intentional. God was assuring His people that they remained continually before Him.
The phrase, “Your walls are continually before Me,” referred to the walls of Jerusalem. These walls represented the city’s security, welfare, identity, and future restoration. Even though the people saw destruction, God saw restoration. Even though they focused on what had been lost, God remained committed to what He had promised to rebuild.
Taking the Lesson One Step Further
While the original meaning points to Jerusalem’s physical walls, the principle behind this passage reveals something profound about the character of God.
In our own lives, we face walls of every kind. There are walls of fear, disappointment, financial hardship, broken relationships, unanswered questions, declining health, and spiritual discouragement. Some walls are obvious. Others remain hidden from our view until we suddenly find ourselves standing before them.
The encouraging truth is that none of these walls are hidden from God.
God sees the walls that stand before us today. He also sees the walls that lie ahead tomorrow. From His eternal vantage point, He knows every obstacle, every challenge, and every circumstance that will touch our lives.
The writer of Hebrews reminds us: “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.” (Hebrews 4:13)
Because God sees what we cannot, we do not need to live in fear of the unknown.
This does not mean we stop praying. Scripture teaches us to pray continually and not lose heart. However, our prayers are not meant to inform God of something He has overlooked.
Jesus said: “For your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.” (Matthew 6:8)
Prayer is not bringing God information. Prayer is bringing God our trust.
We do not pray because God is unaware. We pray because God invites us into relationship with Him. We pray because the One who already knows every wall we will ever face also promises to walk with us through them.
Therefore, when difficulties arise, we can rest in this confidence: God has never been surprised by anything in our lives. Before we encountered the problem, He had already seen it. Before we shed our tears, He already knew the comfort we would need. Before we reached the wall, God was already there.
Practical Applications for Daily Victorious Living
Remember that you are never forgotten. When feelings tell you otherwise, anchor yourself in God’s promise that you are continually before Him (Isaiah 49:16).
Pray from a place of trust rather than panic. God already knows your needs. Bring Him your heart, your concerns, and your dependence upon Him (Matthew 6:8).
Face today’s walls with confidence. The obstacles before you may be new to you, but they are not new to God. He sees what you cannot see and is already at work (Hebrews 4:13).
One Final Thought
Perhaps the most comforting truth found in this passage is not merely that God remembers us, but that He sees everything concerning us.
The walls behind us, the walls surrounding us, and the walls ahead of us are continually before God. Nothing in our lives has escaped His attention. Nothing has caught Him off guard. Nothing has altered His love for His children.
When Zion cried, “The LORD has forsaken me,” God answered with reassurance rather than rebuke. He reminded His people that they were engraved upon His hands and that their walls remained continually before Him.
The same God who saw Jerusalem’s broken walls also saw their restoration.
So, when you find yourself standing before a wall that seems impossible, remember this truth:
The wall may be in front of you, but it has always been before God.
And the God who sees every wall is still able to make a way where there seems to be no way.
Always remember:
You are not forgotten.
Your struggles are not unnoticed.
Your future is not uncertain to God.
The God who sees the walls is also the God who walks with you through them.
God’s purposes are never hindered by the walls you face. Never forget that.
