In his letter to the early Christian Church, the Apostle Peter addresses the importance of submission to various forms of authority, including governing authorities (1 Peter 2:13-17).
Peter emphasizes that submitting to human authorities is an act of obedience to God. This principle extends to respecting and honoring everyone, regardless of their social or economic status. By living in submission and respect, Christians can bear witness to their faith and contribute to the well-being of society.
Humility and Gentleness - outward forms of Submission and Respect
In the book of Matthew (Matthew 5:5), during the famous Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches that the meek will inherit the earth, emphasizing the value of humility and gentleness.
The meekness described by Jesus relates to qualities such as gentleness, humility, and a lack of pride. These are attributes that contribute to loving and harmonious relationships within the Christian community.
Commit Your Way to the Lord
The great Psalmist wrote in Psalm 37:5-7 that we, as the chosen people of God, should "Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes."
This Psalm emphasizes trust in God's authority and the importance of living righteously, even in the face of apparent success of those who may not act righteously. It can be seen as a call to submit to the divine authority in one's life.
Submission and Respect: A Blueprint for Harmonious Living
Peter, Jesus, and the Psalms, provide us with a blueprint for harmonious living and a strong foundation for our faith. By showing respect for authorities, praying for leaders, and serving others in our daily lives, we not only fulfill our commitment to God but also contribute to a more just and compassionate society.
Practical Steps for Daily Victorious Living
Respect for Authorities: Show respect for governmental leaders and institutions, even when you disagree with them, as an expression of your obedience to God.
Praying for Leaders: Pray for wisdom and guidance for those in authority, recognizing their responsibility to govern justly and for the well-being of society.
Service to Others: Engage in acts of service and kindness within your community, reflecting God's love and care for all people.
Let these principles guide our actions, and may our lives be a testament to the transformative power of submission and respect in the Kingdom of God.
