Mastering Your Moments - God’s Way
Recently, our Brother-in-Christ, @NoamLeon, shared a thoughtful and creative list of 15 time-management tips on Substack, called “Mastering Time Management”. It is a blend of humor, wisdom, and practicality. At first glance, it’s the kind of list you might expect from a productivity coach or lifehacker. But as I read through it, I couldn’t help but see something deeper: a spiritual invitation. An opportunity to reflect on how we, as followers of Christ, steward our time - not just for efficiency, but for eternal impact.
Each tip, from “Eat the Frog First” to “Take Care of Yourself,” touches on a real-life challenge we all face in managing our time. But what if we looked at these not just as techniques, but as tools for discipleship? What if time management wasn’t about squeezing more into our day, but about creating space for what matters most to God?
The Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 5:15–16:
“So then, be careful how you walk, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil.”
Time, Scripture teaches, is not ours to control, but ours to redeem. Every moment is a gift, and every task, no matter how small, can be offered as worship. Whether we’re writing to-do lists or setting boundaries, God desires that we live with wisdom, focus, and faithfulness.
So together, let’s revisit this list and see it through the lens of Scripture. Let’s learn how to master our moments, God’s way. Not just for productivity's sake, but for the sake of His kingdom, His glory, and the flourishing of our souls.
1. The 5-Minute Rule: “If it takes less than 5 minutes, do it now.”
Biblical Wisdom: “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord and not for people.” (Colossians 3:23 )
Reflection: Small tasks may seem insignificant, but faithfulness in the small prepares us for the big. Taking initiative honors God.
2. Eat the Frog First: “Tackle the hardest task first.”
Biblical Wisdom: “She rises while it is still night and gives food to her household…” (Proverbs 31:15a)
Reflection: Beginning the day with discipline sets a holy tone. Don’t delay what must be done. God equips us for every task.
3. Pomodoro Technique: “Work for 25 minutes, then rest.”
Biblical Wisdom: “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the Lord your God...” (Exodus 20:9–10a)
Reflection: God created a rhythm of work and rest. Short, intentional breaks can help sustain us over the long haul.
4. Make a To-Do List
Biblical Wisdom: “The plans of the diligent certainly lead to advantage…” (Proverbs 21:5a)
Reflection: Planning is a form of stewardship. A to-do list can help you serve God and others more effectively.
5. Set Alarms
Biblical Wisdom: “So teach us to number our days, that we may present to You a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)
Reflection: Time is a gift. Using reminders helps us live purposefully and avoid waste.
6. Delegate
Biblical Wisdom: “Moses’ father-in-law said to him…‘You will surely wear out… appoint leaders… they shall judge the people at all times.’” (Exodus 18:17–22)
Reflection: We aren’t meant to do it all. Sharing responsibilities honors God’s design for community.
7. Avoid Multitasking
Biblical Wisdom: “But the Lord answered and said to her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; but only one thing is necessary…’” (Luke 10:41–42)
Reflection: Multitasking can fragment our focus. Center your heart, like Mary did, on what truly matters.
8. Use Apps and Tools
Biblical Wisdom: “Every good thing given…is from above, coming down from the Father of lights…” (James 1:17)
Reflection: Technology, when used wisely, is a blessing. Let it serve God’s purposes in your life.
9. Break Tasks into Chunks
Biblical Wisdom: “For who has despised the day of small things?” (Zechariah 4:10a)
Reflection: Don’t underestimate small beginnings. Manageable steps lead to meaningful progress.
10. Set Boundaries
Biblical Wisdom: “Let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’; anything beyond these is of evil origin.” (Matthew 5:37)
Reflection: Boundaries are not selfish; they’re spiritual. Guard your time as sacred.
11. Reward Yourself
Biblical Wisdom: “Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us; and confirm for us the work of our hands…” (Psalm 90:17)
Reflection: Celebrating progress is biblical. God delights in our diligent efforts and our joy in His blessings.
12. Keep a Calendar
Biblical Wisdom: “But all things must be done properly and in an orderly way.” (1 Corinthians 14:40)
Reflection: A calendar helps us live with intention. Order creates space for obedience and peace.
13. Take Care of Yourself
Biblical Wisdom: “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit…?” (1 Corinthians 6:19)
Reflection: Caring for your health is not vanity, it’s stewardship. Rest and nourishment honor God.
14. Limit Social Media
Biblical Wisdom: “Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth.” (Colossians 3:2)
Reflection: Not everything online feeds your soul. Protect your attention for things eternal.
15. Reflect and Adjust
Biblical Wisdom: “Examine yourselves, whether you are in the faith; test yourselves…” (2 Corinthians 13:5)
Reflection: Growth in Christ requires reflection. Align your habits with His calling regularly.
One Final Thought
Time is a gift, and how we steward it reveals what we truly value. The Apostle Paul writes:
“Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:15–16)
Remember then, you’re not just managing time…you’re stewarding eternity in the moments God gives you.
